The epidemiological development of Corona in this country is only followed by the evaluation of wastewater. According to the Ministry of Health, no increase in the incidence of infection can currently be read from the wastewater monitoring data.
However, according to the “Standard,” an increase should already indicate a trend reversal. Rising infection figures would only be logical for molecular biologist Ulrich Elling. “We haven’t had a wave for a very long time, so it’s just time again. The numbers are really low right now, but immunity is waning. The current delicate increase does not show a summer wave, but it is possibly the beginning of the fall wave. That will come after school starts at the latest,” Elling said.
Unclear which Corona variant is currently predominant
While the testing infrastructure has been dismantled, individuals with symptoms can access free testing at office-based physicians. Testing at pharmacies is fee-based.
It is unclear which Corona variant is prevalent, as no sample was evaluated in Austria in July. In June, some EG.5 samples were evaluated – this variant is also likely to be the predominant one.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends only a monovalent vaccine against the XBB variant.
